Our Story | Chop Naija Kitchen

ABOUT US

Bringing vibrant, rich, and truly authentic Nigerian culinary experiences straight to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Our Story

Chop Naija Kitchen is more than a restaurant. It is a story of resilience, love, community, and food that tastes like home.

It began in 2020, in the middle of COVID-19. The world was locked down. Restaurants were closed. Families were isolated. But in a small home in Raleigh, North Carolina, a husband and wife who had lived in this community for many years decided to do something different.

They missed home. They missed the aroma of jollof rice , the heat of Goatmeat Peppersoup, the comfort of egusi soup with pounded yam, the laughter that comes when Nigerians gather to chop; to eat together.

So they started cooking.

From their own home kitchen, they began offering to-go plates of delicious, authentic, mouth-shattering Nigerian food to neighbors, friends, and the African community in the Triangle. Word spread fast. One plate became ten. Ten became fifty. Soon, every day, cars lined up at their home. The crowd became larger. The kitchen became too small.

Their home had become a restaurant without them planning it.

To meet demand and keep up with health standards, they moved into a commissary kitchen. For months they worked late nights, prepping, stewing, frying, packing, building a loyal following one customer at a time.

But they wanted to reach more people.

They took a bold step and invested in a food trailer. It became the only Nigerian food trailer in RTP (Research Triangle Park) and beyond, a bright spot serving authentic Nigerian cuisines at festivals, office parks, neighborhoods, and community events across Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

Wherever the trailer parked, it created a small Nigeria. People from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and other African beautiful nations, Jamaica, America, all world communities, stood in the same line, ate the same food, shared stories, and listened to Afrobeats together.

What is when the vision became clear.

The Triangle is one of the most diverse and fastest growing regions in America, yet it had no family friendly, sit-down Nigerian restaurant where people could come together, sit, dine and wine, and truly belong.

Chop Naija Kitchen was conceptualized to fill that gap.

“Chop” means to eat in Nigerian Pidgin. “Naija” means Nigeria. Chop Naija is an invitation to come and eat like a Nigerian. Come hungry, leave as family.

From a home kitchen during a pandemic, to a commissary kitchen, to a trailblazing food trailer, Chop Naija Kitchen is now on its next chapter; a full, medium-sized, family-friendly restaurant that will be Nigeria’s first sit-down restaurant in the Triangle, built by a husband-and-wife team who call this community home.

This is not just our history. It is the history of every customer who lined up at our home, every friend who shared our flyer, every family who said: “We need this here.”

We are Chop Naija Kitchen. And we are just getting started.
